International specialist in the field of integrated water resources management, Dr. Raoudha Gafreg revealed on her social media account that the complications of the water crisis in Tunisia are underlined in the Agricultural Development Group ( GDA) Ouled Neji in the governorate of Zaghouan. This region has undergone a water shortage for approximately three days, although the bottling company continues to supply the network at a rate of one litre per second (approximately 100 m³ per day).
“So where does the water go?” questions Dr. Raoudha Gafreg. The answer is shocking! “After reviewing the network, no signs of loss or leaks were noted. Nevertheless, it turned out that one of the suction cups was overflowing with water, and this water flowed into a dry river, therefore alerting a local resident,” explains Dr. Raoudha Gafreg.
Indeed, “the suction cups, located high up to remove air from the pipes, pose an issue because the one in question was located in the middle of the forest, in a secluded area that is difficult to access. Beekeepers or other intermediaries have simply blocked the operation of the suction cup to supply water to their bees, hundreds of hives of which are carried everywhere in search of food and water. This is the first time that I have noticed a diversion of water for the benefit of biodiversity to the detriment of humans. Unfortunately, self-interest and selfishness appear to be the ultimate motivators. This behaviour constitutes a grave attack on the public hydraulic domain and is a crime punishable by the Water Code.”
Dr. Raoudha Gafreg called on the authorities and decision-makers to comprehend the extent of the deterioration of the water situation, both for humans and for biodiversity…” A few months ago, a sucker was removed and stolen, today leaving 750 people without water after blocking the suction cup for another use: acupuncture,” adds Dr. Raoudha Gafreg.
