Tunisia: Participation rate of 12.44% in 2nd round of local elections

Tunisians headed to the polls this Sunday, February 4, 2024, to elect their representatives in local councils. All polling stations for this second round of local elections opened their doors today at 8:00 a.m. and shut down at 6:00 p.m.

The participation rate attained 12.44%, or 520,303 voters out of a total of 4 million 181 thousand 871 voters who went to the polling stations, according to a statement by the president of the Independent High Authority for Elections. (ISIE), Farouk Bouasker during a press briefing held at El-Menzah Sports Palace.

The second round of local elections or elections of the Regional and Territorial Council implicated 1,558 candidates for member status in 224 local councils. It took place in 2034 voting centres and concerned 779 constituencies where no candidate received an absolute majority in the first round.

With this 2nd round, the first stage of the process of installing the second parliamentary chamber, the National Council of Districts and Regions, is completed.

Preliminary results for the second round are anticipated to be announced no later than Wednesday, February 7, 2024, with final results released following review and resolution of appeals.
