Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, Regional Director of Trade in Tunisia Maher Ghribi reported that during the first two days of Ramadan, economic monitoring agencies carried out 304 inspection visits. These visits targeted different sectors, including vegetables and grains, as well as basic foodstuffs, white meat, red meat, eggs, fish, and bakeries.
The inspections resulted in 80 economic offences being registered. In the vegetable and grain sector alone, there were 30 violations, which included 18 instances of price promotion and hikes, 11 instances where prices were not shown, and one case implicating the possession and use of an illegal weighing scale.
Ghribi further remarked that the basic foodstuffs sector saw 29 violations, including 17 instances of unauthorized selling and price increases, 11 instances of failing to uphold transaction transparency (such as issues with billing, not displaying prices, and employing illegal weighing scales), and one case of refusal to sell.
Moreover, 27 violations were recognised in the sectors of eggs, poultry, red meat, and bakeries. The campaigns likewise led to the seizure of 112 kg of rice and 280 kg of bananas. These items were redistributed in large areas to guarantee that they were sold to consumers at legal prices, Ghribi stated.
