Tunisia – Zaghouan: 5 people arrested after poisoning of two students in school restaurant

Yesterday, the Zaghouan public prosecutor ordered the arrest of five people in association with an incident where two students living in the Taher Al-Haddad college dormitory in Zeriba were poisoned, according to a security source.

Jamal Al-Naifer, the Regional Director for Food Safety, told the press that a team responsible for monitoring food safety visited the college, finding and subsequently disposing of a quantity of rotten meat and vegetables. The disposal was carried out under legal procedures, following consultation with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which had directed the security services to initiate an inquiry into the incident.

Al-Naifer clarified that the investigation was prompted by a school physician who, upon being informed, detected an abnormal smell in the school’s restaurant kitchen while investigating the students’ health. This was in reaction to two students at the school experiencing diarrhoea, with tests revealing that they had consumed food unfit for consumption.

Underlining the seriousness of the situation, Al-Naifer informed that all school and university restaurants would undergo comprehensive health surveillance. This decision, made in coordination with the health services, is intended to guarantee the safety and quality of food products provided to students and preserve the health of these young individuals.
