Japan-PM Kishida dissolves parl’t ahead of general election

Japan’s new Prime Minister Fumio Kishida dissolved the lower house of the country’s parliament on Thursday ahead of this month’s general election.

“I want to use the election to tell the people what we’re trying to do and what we’re aiming for,” Kishida told reporters.

The general election, in which Kishida will lead the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), is scheduled for October 31. After he took over from Yoshihide Suga on October 4, Kishida vowed to draft a multitrillion yen stimulus plan by the end of the year to help the country overcome the COVID-19 crisis.
