Tunisia-Chakandali: “absence of Central Bank Governor from delegation participating in Davos will have no impact” [Video]

Financial and economic expert Ridha Chakandali remarked that the absence of the Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia from the delegation accompanying the Prime Minister to the Davos Forum will not likely have notable impacts on the Tunisian economy. In a statement to Tunisie Nimérique on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, he clarified that the Davos Forum is not a platform for negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or for securing external resources in hard currency. Instead, it functions as an opportunity to showcase Tunisia as an appealing destination for investment.

Chakandali stressed that Marwan Abbasi’s non-participation in the delegation does not affect Tunisia’s engagement in the forum. He further noted that Abbasi’s presence at the forum would typically involve talks on Tunisia’s monetary policies, which are not considered among the risks confronting the Tunisian economy in 2024. Chakandali highlighted that Abbasi’s presence could be relevant for negotiating supplementary mobilization of hard currency from donors, but the Davos Forum is not the appropriate space for such matters.
